What is stopping you ?
I really want to know.
Over the last ten years I have helped so many people produce music, be it through my online courses or through one to one mentoring. My Youtube channel has helped thousands of people achieve things they never thought possible before engaging with the Waxadisc content and applying themselves to hard work.
So why is it then that so many people more often than not, fail to finally release something or set up a record label of their own?
I read so many comments and get so many people tell me that they dont have time or that they cant finish a track etc. These really are excuses and we all know we do have time to put into something creative that we can call our own. The Greek philosopher Marcus Aurelius said "You could be great today, but instead you choose tomorrow"
We put it off for a variety of reasons, Yes you will have a job and maybe a family of children to take care off which comes first obviously. But I bet that most of you reading this will spend a few hours per week scrolling through social media instead of investing that time into production. I bet most of you reading this are agonizing over a sound or a bass line that you are unsure of, instead of just going with your gut and releasing it.
I know for a fact that many producers waste so much of their potential on things that nobody else cares about like the tiny sound effect you cant decide to put into your underground deep house track that nobody will really notice anyway.
Harsh truths you may say, but facts nonetheless. I really need you all to stop wasting time on things that only you are picking over. And to tell the truth the reason you are picking over these minor details is because you are scared really. Too scared to release that track through fear or haters or inferiority. Somewhere among the time wasting is a massive fear. So you blame it on technical halts rather than your own insecurity.
But believe me when I say this, I have made some records I thought were good at the time and looking back I now know they could have been alot better, but to Hell with that, they were right at the time and now I look back only because I am a better producer now and its only because I have improved do I notice the things I didnt do as good back then. And I have released stuff on vinyl and digital which has cost me money over time but the point is I got those records out and they saw the light of day.
I am certain some of you reading this will have dozens if not more tracks unfinished or almost finished due to a tiny section that you are pondering over? Yes I am probably right, however I am not here to shame or punish, I am simply trying to get you to see why holding back through the invisible wall of fear is doing you no good at all.
In 100 years from now you will not be alive, unless they find a way to keep us living longer, a highly unlikely reality, but my point is your work will not have any chance of being celebrated or remembered in anyway if it rots away on your hard drive along with you and your grand kids or relatives will only just toss it in the bin.
What a waste that would be to know your music got lost forever without any other ears to enjoy it other than your own insecure self. This is why this article is a wake up call for you to get over yourself and get over the invisible wall of fear.
Fear is not real when it comes to internal thoughts and worries about your work. Yes fear is real when it comes to being afraid of deadly spiders or dangerous animals or even heights. But the fear of not releasing your creativity to the world is purely made up inside your own head.
So without anymore berating you and your fears, I have a short video below for you to take bite size pieces of encouragement with you and move yourself into a better space where you can be productive and strong enough to put your music out, whether that be on Soundcloud or Band camp or if you have the digital distribution to get it on Spotify and Beatport etc.
