You are not lost, you're just not ready yet. But I can help.

IS MUSIC MENTORING SOMETHING YOU MIGHT BENEFIT FROM?

This will appeal to those of you who feel lost, frustrated or just don't know what kind of music you want to produce anymore?

We have all been lost with our creative world at some point in time. It is part of the course and the most painful part especially when you want to make something.

I used to force myself to make something even if I was not in the mood and to be honest that is the worst kind of advice anyone can give you. When they say, you have got to go to the gym no matter what. Which if you want to lose weight and it is for the good of your physical health then sure you need to stick it out when it gets tough to gain discipline and to improve your health.

But music is about mental health and emotional health, which for me can only be done when you are in the mood. You have to be on your best vibe to make something otherwise you will just fail and get distracted easily.

As the saying goes.

ART IS LIKE A FART. IF YOU HAVE TO FORCE IT THEN IT IS PROBABLY SHIT

I firmly believe that phrase and it is true. You can not force creativity out of yourself. It is something that can only be achieved when the juices are flowing. Do not listen to anyone else other than your own mood when it comes to creating something.

There are some people who can write songs when they are angry, and some people can produce a beat no matter what mood they are in. But to create a steady well structured piece of art from start to finish, you have to be in the mood. Don't force yourself to do something out of guilt for feeling too tired or in a bad mood. It just wont do.

BEING READY

When do you feel ready? I have been doing this for 33 years and I still don't believe I am fully ready as an artist. The truth is because we are never ready completely. We are only ready for certain tasks and levels at any one time in our musical or artistic development.

You see we can never know everything about the art we pursue. So being ready is an illusion, but being ready for different levels of our journey is what you need to think about and practice upon.

So if you feel that you want to make a track but you are not sure if it is ready then trust your gut instinct. The thing that is not ready is the mix and not you. You are ready, you perhaps just are not ready yet to be as disciplined as you need to be to take the track to a final stage and get it mixed and mastered. So if you want to be ready to do the mix for example then learn about mixing and not the final outcome. Then you can take your mixing levels to the ready stage and so on.

But having said that, what if you are ready but you are just not convinced enough because you are your own worst enemy and you are perhaps trying too hard to sound exactly like someone else?

This is a trap we all fall into sometimes and it is normal. I have done it and fell victim to it on several releases over the years. You end up being untrue to yourself and your own progression. So try to avoid the copying route. However on the flip side of that, it is important to learn from reference tracks also, but try not to be exact in that approach. Always try and tweak your own style out of the things you are inspired by.

So being ready is a myth and its important to realize that we are only ready for certain stages in our creative lives at once. So if you feel ready to produce a track but you feel that you are not ready enough to take that to the next level and get it ready to be mixed and mastered etc, then maybe music production mentoring could be something to consider?
